I always see the first day of school as the last day of summer. Of course, the official last day of summer isn’t until a few weeks after school starts but that can seem hard to believe with tests to prepare for and homework to complete. So, because school started on Friday, I see summer as coming to an end. The inspiration for this poem came from me thinking back to the good old summer days.

She remembered when she was younger
And all she dreamed about was long summers
Those times when she never looked behind
Free of worries, with a peace of mind

She remembered summers full of barbeques
And long afternoons plunging into pools
Riding bikes with friends down the hill
Saying no matter what, they’d be friends still

Around a crackling campfire, they sat
Toasting marshmallows and eating smores, they laughed
Joining in harmony with her father’s guitar
As they stared up at the sky wishing on a shooting star

She remembered those summer dreams
Of eating cold chocolate ice cream
And watermelon so sweet
She thought her life was complete

She remembered running on the shore
Surf crashing onto the beach forever more
Seeing if she could brave
Swimming in the icy cold waves

Soft sand between her toes
She built sandcastles and watched them grow
Until the sky was painted pink, orange and red
From the sun setting on the horizon ahead

Collecting sea shells
Under the sky painted with pastels
Running in the sunset, popsicle in hand
Why summer ended she could never understand

Now, she remembered those summer days
Of the time under the sun’s rays
And her friends that are strangers now
She wants to go back, she wonders how

She cannot go back, never
Nothing was meant to last forever
Time comes and goes like a summer breeze
Now those experiences are just memories
