I was listening to music that sounded like it came from some sci-fi movie that took place somewhere deep in space and I got inspired to write a poem about the universe.

The universe opens up ahead
Dozens of stars floating like lights strung on a silvery thread

In this harsh vacuum of space, we lie
Staring up at the sky wondering why
Somehow we exist in impossibility
That life here on Earth could thrive
Among all the exploding stars and black holes in the sky

Somewhere above
Satellites circle the earth in eternal love
Just like the earth circles the sun
Round and round and never done

This hostile universe contains
All the mysteries we have left to discover
And the places we have yet to uncover

Humanity’s desire, to go farther
To find out more, to reach out higher
Grows as this universe expands

We all wish to float around in zero g
And see the Earth like the stars see
How small and tiny we really are
In comparison to the trillions of stars

Somewhere, other galaxies float around
With their own suns and stars
Their own planets, a new Mars

In a place where we can hear no sound
Life can still be found
Temperatures below freezing
And heat above scorching
We still go around and around

Compared to the size of the universe
We’re smaller than a dime
The universe has existed since the beginning of time
We have hardly made a dent
In the time the universe has spent

All of life on earth
From the dawn of the dinosaurs
To the creation of s’mores
Humanity’s greatest rises
And biggest falls
All of our problems that we have yet to solve
Every small thing here seems so big
We make a big deal about everything
When our everything is really nothing
It’s hard not to think
We’re so small that
We’ve barely existed at all
