Everyone loves superheroes. What’s not to like about them. They go on amazing adventures, they have superpowers that can make them run fast, fly, have extraordinary strength, or even shoot spiderwebs. Plus, they get to wear some pretty cool suits too.

Come to think about it, most heroes wear masks that go along with their suits. They wear their masks proudly without shame. Why won’t we do the same?

No one could have prepared for a global pandemic so we all had to-and still are doing-whatever it takes to keep us safe.

For most of us, that means staying at home, sanitizing our groceries, working from home, doing distance learning, and practicing social distancing. We also wear masks when we go anywhere outside.

We know that COVID is transmitted through droplets when people talk, sneeze or cough (talk about disgusting). By wearing masks, we’re preventing ourselves from spreading these droplets and by breathing other people’s droplets in (Even more gross. Just imagine breathing someone else’s breath, which we did before COVID started).

With social distancing guidelines slowly coming out of place, it is important that we be more careful than before but that doesn’t stop some people from doing some well not so careful things.

People are protesting to try to get places to reopen faster and to be honest, I get it. We’re all stuck at home and we are all bored. We all want to get back to the things that we love like shopping with friends, eating out, and going to the movies. It’s not good for the economy to keep places under lockdown for so long.

But, if we are going to open up, we have to open up in a way that is safe so we don’t get hit with a second wave of COVID. No one wants the number of cases to increase so we have to be extra cautious while opening up again. That means taking things slowly to make sure that they are working. We need to put the health of our friends, family, and community first.

I get that it is stressful and annoying for everyone because we all want to get back to some resemblance of normal. We will get there but it is going to take some time.

Refusing to wear masks is only going to make the situation worse. So the question is why don’t people wear masks? A lot of individuals who refuse to wear masks might underestimate the virus or feel like they are hiding by wearing one. They see it as a sign of weakness. Ironically enough, people who wear masks are stronger than those who don’t.

This quote I came across a few days ago sums it up pretty well: “It is not the strongest of species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.”

COVID-19 has no barriers. Anyone can get infected by it.

That’s why we all need to look at the last part of the quote: being adaptable to change. This pandemic is a situation that is constantly changing. We are always learning more information about the virus. So, we need to learn how to adapt to these changes.

But, I think it’s a safe bet to wear a mask. You can’t go wrong wearing one.

If superheroes can wear masks with pride, we can wear them too and defeat this coronavirus in stride.

Let’s all help protect people. We can all be the superheroes we aspire to be simply by putting a mask on.
