A while ago, I came across the concept of the glass ceiling-a limitation we don’t see when we start on our paths. From experience, I know that they are very hard to see and even harder to break past. This poem comes from my own story-about how I shattered the glass ceiling above me and how you can, too.

Drowning
In waves of things we can’t
Trapped
Under things we just can’t get past
We’ve flown so high we’ve hit the max
Invisible limitations
Ceilings of glass

Hopes burning like fire
Thrumming with desire
How are we supposed to get higher?

Our aspirations
Are blocked by our very own limitations
Pessimism, self doubt, negativity
Cloud all the things we can be

You want to rise?
Believe you can
Melt your heart of stone
Alight, ignite
Set it on fire, turn it to lava
Break your chains
And rise above the remains

Those limitations,
Shake them

Those glass ceilings,
Break them
shatter them
Into a million pieces

Let the shards rain
Let them claw at you
Let them rip you apart
Let them eat you
Let them dig at you
Let them burn like flames
Racing down your veins

Feel the burn
But remember the pain

And when the glass is broken
Let the invisible remains
Sparkle under under the sun
Let your scars
Lift you up
Rebuilt, reborn
Sometimes the broken things
Are the best things

It’s time to shatter
It’s time to break past
Ceilings made of glass
